Hi Tony, this is not strictly something one could put in a Time Capsule, but is, I feel, a valid comment on our situation today which could be of positive interest to someone in some future time. David, with a repost!

Advice to the New Incumbent

Since our demise will probably be due to our own stupidity or greed, or both, we would not be too well placed as a species to advise our successors! We had it all and we blew it – but with a little hindsight…………. What would I leave to the next incumbent of this planet?

Advice?                 Certainly

Information?         Certainly

Warnings?             Certainly

Advice:

·         Respect the earth and all you find there, animal, mineral and vegetable

·         Treat each other with respect and honesty, giving help where you can

·         Prepare a set of rules (laws), by which you can live and protect the weaker among you

·         Do not allow your population to increase beyond that which you can reasonably sustain

·         Limit your energy consumption to that which can be supplied from renewable sources – solar, wind, water power

·         Ensure that everyone is properly educated, not only in academics, but also in practical skills, social skills, and     personal health and fitness

·         Ensure that everyone has access to health care as needed

·         Ensure that everyone has access to fresh water, food and shelter

·         Find out how to make chocolate!

Information:

·         I leave you my copy of Bill Bryson’s “A Short History of Nearly Everything”

·         I leave you my copy of The Times “Atlas of the World” (as it was!)

·         I leave you my copy of the Dorling Kindersley “Visual Dictionary”

·         I leave you my copy of The Times “Concise History of the World”

·         I leave you my copy of “Earth”

·         I leave you my copy of “The Human Body”

·         I leave you my copy of “Ocean”

·         I leave you my copy of my wife’s poetry

Warnings:

·         Do not use fossil fuels. Ever.

·         Do not practice deforestation – the forests are part of the balance of nature

·         Do not over-fish, over-hunt or in any way interfere with the balance of nature

·         Do not be afraid to correct miscreants

Our successors may, of course, come from a more advanced knowledge base than that which we have currently attained. If not, and the whole thing starts again, we may not progress beyond the stage of licking lichen off a rock – in which case “nature” will have won, simply by our evolution coming to a dead end! Hey Ho…
But seriously, as a species and looking only on the positive side, we have invented, designed, explored, painted, sculpted, written and thought amazing things. And we have loved.

and one of my greatest loves, David, is your more serious writing...

this is no exception....my goodness, what an informative find this would be.

Why didn;t you go into politics, you would have been so good and hey, lol,

my poetry could start being published again, (I really liked that)

and now, Dear Sir, I bid you "Goodnight", a super write, Les x

Oh Dad - this sort of encompasses all that is 'you' to be honest! I would expect no less, and think that this is perfect for the "time capsule" (tho more "time trunk!!") As you say, we have indeed accomplished so very much over the millennia, though it is hard to imagine given by the state of things today. What a succinct understanding of our world - I love this! xx

David I hope when your time capsule is opened (many years from now) they don't say. "Shit I wish we had found this much earlier." For things seem to be getting worse instead of better. I enjoyed your piece...Tony (potleek)
