When I was at Art College in the early sixties, our college grants were truely meagre

as one had to buy own brushes, scalpels, folders etc so eating became our main source of economy.

...............

Sunday was a chicken whole

savoured was the best breast meat,

Monday was a stew of sorts

with legs and wings and bits to eat,

Tuesday was another day, which

left us in a peckish way

so we nibbled bones til bare

to use for stock and soup so grey.

Wednesday was time for ribs

making soup once more so riche

and Thursdays we would pick them clean

adding eggs to make a quiche.

Friday was a special day

when grants of all four pounds,

let us go to our students pub

for one or two half rounds.

hahaha Now, you have plenty of pennies and still you have a fantastic ability to feed the 5000 on anything! You need to write a cook book for left overs, you are so tastily creative and my salivatory (is that even a word??) juices are regularly activated and excited, not to mention whilst always leaving me with a full and happy belly!! hahaha x

Gosh, how you flatter my cullinary skills, Sacha, but it's so much easier some 55 years on as ingredients have widened in choice and the world is a smaller place (or should that be...plate? lol) .

It's true though, Sacha, students back then used to have to stretch their food budget before curries and pastas were commonplace ingredients and it was a great way to learn how to improvise, but I accept your kind words,, many thanks, Zy

Zy I too remember the early sixties, but not as a student. Thrown into the adult world. My first wages were just over £3. Heavens above that must have been a big chicken. But enjoyed the meals throughout. Now I enjoyed very much the use of an old Frech word (riche) to rhyme with quiche, very clever...Tony (potleek)

Hy Tony, don't you remember the chickens hanging in the butchers shop and if I remember right, they would cost somewhere between 5 shillings (25p) for a roaster and 3 for an old broiler and it fed three students for three days, but guess what....old habits die hard, I still only use the breast on first day, other bits on second in a casserole and then make a soup from the carcasse, lol.

Thanks for reading and your comments, Zy

Zy I remember the old butcher shops very well. Chickens, rabbits and reams of sausages all hung up and sawdust on the floors. When buying the butcher would throw in a couple of sausages free or an extra piece of fat for cooking. Where you could see sausage being made or meat being minced. Ah those were the days when you got value for money. Not like today, most things come pre-packed, frozen and pumped full of water...Tony (potleek)

I hate to say it, Tony, that was a time so long ago ....a time when we were already grown up yet using ingenuity to make things last, but, lol, let's not even think about rationing. those were the days that will probably never come again, Zy

Hey Les,

Sorry, I seem to have missed this one! Clever title, by the way.

You have always been an adventurous cook and we've benefited from your love of challenge in the kitchen.

Yes, the frugal days have passed, fortunately, but the legacy of not wasting anything lives on, and indeed produces some very interesting dishes!! You really should write that recipe book, Les.

Zy, It's always nice to re-read pieces from way back regardless of when first posted. Funny enough I can't add much more than I did in my first comment. Apart from old lessons are well taught and serve well...Tony (potleek)
